About
art by mags! encompasses all the creative things I make. AKA Margaret Coble, I am a 40 year-old former club DJ, former electronic music magazine editor (DMA Magazine, now defunct), current Music Reviews Editor (Curve Magazine), former show/community event promoter (Girl Gang Productions), current Michigan Womyn's Music Festival worker (One World Media crew), current co-curator for the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival Film Fest, former New Orleans Dyke March organizer, former Reel Identities LGBT Film Festival organizer, former OUT Music judge, and current member of the Louisville and New Orleans Craft Mafias. Plus I do some volunteer PR for the Derby City Rollergirls.
I like the term "art-n-craftivist" because I do consider what I do "art," as well as "craft," and I like to think I infuse my personal politics into everything I do. My work has been influenced by folk art from various cultures around the globe, 1960s-70s pop art, urban street art (i.e. graffiti, street stencilling, and other forms of public art), and of course, graphic and commercial art. In college (where I got a BA in Art History), I fell in love with painting, printmaking, and photography (I was photo-editor at my award-winning campus newspaper); post-college, when I moved to New Orleans, I had a brief stint as a folk artist, mostly painting furniture and canvases in a geometric folk art style. I quickly got disillusioned with the traditional art establishment though, and abandoned it in favor of my DJ and music journalism careers... until the 2000 presidential election theft and the war in Iraq sparked me and some friends to start doing some politically-based street stencilling, which ended up being a springboard to what I do now.
Currently, I'm all about combining DIY printing processes like stencilling with recycled/found materials like vinyl records, scrap wood, thrift store clothing, etc. to make one-of-a-kind, hand-made objects like clocks, signs, mixed media constructions, clothing, accessories and more.
I was on track to launch my fledgling art-n-crafty biz in the summer of 2005, but Hurricane Katrina kinda intervened and set me back. I evacuated to Louisville, Kentucky to the safety of my sweetheart's arms, and have been camped out here most of the time ever since. I try to return to New Orleans every month or two as my schedule allows, and try to remain active in the New Orleans community as best I can. In 2008, my sweetie and I hope to return to New Orleans full time. For now, I'm exploring the eccentricities of Louisville and trying to establish a secondary homebase here for the business.
