i started this small piece after taking artist bibby gignilliat‘s self-guided online mixed media course in 2025. it began intuitively with no plan but after laying down a collage layer including a lot of patterns, stripes, boxes, and dots from aged papers, then floating some house paint on top to cover some of that up, and then making the gestural graphite line that swoops from the top right down to the bottom, i got a little stuck. the big open white space the covered most of the left side of the painting stumped me for a while. it had to sit around my studio for some months before i realized what it wanted – those bold sakura solid paint marker squiggly lines that drop down from the top to complete the composition. the dark red paper bit on the right looks a little like a raised fist to me. somehow it all came together for me in a grungy, fighting spirit kind of way – this piece wanted to exist. in the end i really love it and i hope you do too!

this is a one of a kind piece of art.
