Description

an exercise in texture, organic shapes and contrast. as many of my wood panels are, this one is a cover up of a previously painted panel. there are so many layers of thick paint underneath, which you can tell by the horizontal ridges that are noticeable in the photo. this composition began as a two page spread in my art journal one day, something that just randomly came out when i was playing, using some colors i don’t usually use – an earthen orange/ochre and a dark almost black brown, with an off-white. the details within each figure/shape are carved into the paint/wood with an awl, as are lines around all the shapes, creating even more texture on the surface of the panel.

i’m calling this “ghosts” but i don’t know if they really are. i don’t know what they are. as with much of my work, it just came to me in a play session, without trying or meaning to. for me it was all about the curvy blobs and the contrasting colors. and carving in those details. but maybe they are ghosts? or alien creatures? who knows. you can rename the piece if you like.
