a crown and a frown

$150.00

mixed media on 12″ x 12″ birch plywood, unframed

Description

what began at first as a throwaway board (offloading of excess paint while working on something else) became one of my favorite backgrounds. it reminded me of an old urban wall with its patchy layers of paint and covered up textures. so it made me want to draw on it, first with a few swirling squiggly lines and then with some bold acrylic markers. this graffiti-like face appeared, first in dirty white but then it screamed to be bolder, in black. i’ve never drawn a face like this before – i don’t know where it came from. it was just spontaneous, but felt perfect as soon as it was done.
